2008 Mercedes Benz GL Class Review, Pictures and Video
The G-Class brings Mercedes-Benz in the full-size SUV market. This exceptional string of cars brings an array of standard features and driving conveniences to potential buyers. It’s no wonder the GL-Class has the Motor Trend Sport Utility of the Year award for 2007. For 2008, more is expected. The BlueTec diesel system model is offered; this uses urea to clean the diesel emissions and the models with urea injection are going on sale this year.
The three models that make up the GL-Class all get different engines. The GL320 CDI SUV gets a 3.2-liter V6 diesel engine, the GL450 gets a 4.6-liter V8 engine and the all-new GL550 gets a 5.5-liter V8 capable of 382 horsepower and 391 pounds-feet of torque. All of these team with a seven-speed automatic transmission that has overdrive and an auto-manual feature.
The GL-Class has three rows of seats and can seat up to seven, but the exterior manages to keep a moderately compacted design scheme. Inside, everything manages to be exceptional. Both the second row 60/40-split rear seatback and the third-row split power seatbacks fold flat to provide various combinations of passenger and cargo. The interior is decorated with various wooden trims on the dashboard and doors and an optional heated leather steering wheel; the new GL550 model has seats decked out in leather upholstery. Large cup holders, a great audio-system, DVD-Based Navigation system, dual-zone climate control and more goodies grace the GL-Class center. The newer GL550 again receives higher end standard equipment, including 3-zone climate control and the harman/kardon LOGIC7 7.1-channel digital surround-sound system; this state of the art system produces 440 watts through 11 speakers and a subwoofer! It sounds like the band is taking advantage of the 2008 GL-Class’s extra space and performing live for you an the passengers. Mercedes-Benz also provides an updated instrument cluster with features such as tire-pressure monitoring, a Maintenance System that keeps track of car service needs, external conditions and more!
Not only are the features overflowing from the GL-Class, but the safety features are as well. The usual frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and window curtain airbags are present in the GL models. Also included is the Integrated Restraint System that adapts the vehicle’s response to collisions based on the intensity of the crash. Also included are the antilock brakes and electronic stability control.
The 2008 GL-Class brings more of what you love about this full-size wonder and then some. It drives with oomph, it handles near flawlessly, it provides optimum comfort for the inhabitants and it does so in style! Don’t pass up this incredible model.
